The only Star Wars movie episode to feature a shock cliffhanger ending is Star Wars Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back. The reason The Empire Strikes Back has a surprise revelation at the conclusion is because George Lucas was under unbelievably massive pressure to surpass Star Wars Episode 4 A New Hope. Additionally, Lucas had his entire personal financial net worth fortune invested in the production of The Empire Strikes Back.
During the making of the Star Wars classic trilogy in the 1980's, A New Hope was the most successful film in the history of Hollywood after its first theatrical release. Lucas created the Darth Vader Is Luke Skywalker's Father and the Han Solo Trapped in Carbonite plot twists in order to give The Empire Strikes Back the extra edge it needed to match the overwhelmingly immense brilliant genius of A New Hope.
After the somewhat adequate theater box office gross results of The Empire Strikes Back in 1980 from worldwide multiplexes cinemas, Lucas didn't have to worry about the profitability of future Star Wars movies. There is no longer the sufficient need to include dramatic surprises in the scripts for the Star Wars film saga.
However, the greatest shock of Star Wars 7 is the existence of a Jedi
traitor, who is conspiring with the Dark Jedi to cause the collapse
of the New Republic and the utter destruction of Luke Skywalker's
new Jedi Order.
